ALERT – ALERT – ALERT

 The Camp Strategic & Planning Committee sold the (blue) 6 month fundraising calendar for drawings from January to June 2012.

Please note there is a printing error for June 2012.  There are 2 blank boxes on the beginning of June which indicates $25 each.  The drawing for June 2012 will begin on Friday, June 1^st.  There will be a $50 prize for June 30, 2012.

For these who bought the fundraising calendar, please make this correction on your calendar.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Valley View’s Holiday Cheer Party

The annual Holiday Cheer Party at Valley View on Sunday, December 4, 2011 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM turned out well with a good crowd (relatives and friends) again this year.  Valley View residents enjoyed chatting with them. This was one of the happiest and most enjoyable events of the year for them. It helped them to keep up with what is happening with the deaf community.  Everyone also enjoyed the refreshments which were provided by the Elwyn.  Many homemade cookies also brought to be distributed to the residents.

Around 3:00 p.m. the residents got cash gifts that were donated by the PA Society of the Advancement of the Deaf (PSAD), the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Senior Citizens of Delaware Valley (DHHSCDV) and the Keystone Central Deaf Senior Citizens (KCDSC).  It was a most exciting moment for the residents.  Everyone had a grand time.

Edward Jenkins, Sandy C. Duncan and Sharon Antal, the PSAD Representatives on the Elwyn Board of Directors and members of the Elwyn Deaf Services Advisory Committee want to thank Elwyn, Lewis Manges, Carole Surdyke and entire Valley View staff for making this event successful.

House legislators will have a hearing today to discuss on two House
Bills…361 and 888. Both bills are known as “an Act providing for the
English language as the official language of the Commonwealth.”

Basically, both bills are much similar. HOWEVER…House Bill #888
eliminates the wordings from “Section 8. Applicabilitiy” as follows:

(6) To provide interpretation for hearing impaired individuals in
American Sign Language.

(7) When using terms of art or phrases from languages other than
English.

(8) For informal and nonbinding translations or communications among or
between representatives of government and other persons if this
activity does not affect or impair supervision, management, conduct or
execution of official actions and if the representatives of government
make clear that these translations or communications are unofficial and
are not binding on the Commonwealth.

House Bill 888 REMOVES American Sign Language from this bill.

If you wish to support on keeping American Sign language in this bill,
support the House Bill 361. Contact your state legislator NOW!
